A Visit From FLAT Stanley

Our friend Ryan had a friend arrive in the mail! It was Flat Stanley – He is flat enough and small enough to fit into an envelop!

We knew he was coming to visit us in our classroom, so we started preparing by reading all about him.

When Ryan came to school today – so did Stanley. He was small enough to come in Ryan’s FOLDER!

We took a few photos of Stanley – first one of the whole class.

Everyone in the room wanted to get their photo taken with Stanley!

Here is Stanley and Ryan and Woody Chuck.

Here is Stanley with the Butterflies!

When it was time for his visit to be over, Ryan’s sister came to pick him up – but first we took a photo of them while Stanley reviewed our map of Staten Island.

Thanks for visiting Stanley!

Our Visit with Borough President James Molinaro at Borough Hall

Today we were invited to have a visit with our Borough President, James Molinaro. He took an interest in our class research project about the cultural, transportation, educational and recreational sites on Staten Island.

His invitation brought us to a ‘Press Conference’ in the beautiful conference room in Borough Hall. We first met Ms. Joanne Nuzzo, aide to the Borough President. She was delighted by the amount of information that our boys and girls had about their research sites.

The students were seated in the conference room, getting ready for the ‘Press Conference’. They behaved so well! Along with the class there were representatives from NY1 and The Staten Island Advance.

Then the Borough President came in and each child gave a short synopsis of their report subject to him. He was impressed!

Brandon got to meet Borough Commissioner of Parks, Thomas A. Paulo. Since his research was on Clove Lakes Park, he gave Mr. Paulo some advice on keeping our parks in tip top shape.

Thanks to our friend Maeve, we had a beautiful gift for the Borough President. It was a ‘Staten Island’ windbreaker. He put it on right away.

We were then ready for the Press Conference. The Borough President and Commissioner Paulo told us about the playgrounds that will be built in parks all around the Island. These parks will be accessible to all children, even those with handicaps. We all thought that that was a great idea and we clapped.

A great surprise was that the Borough President had a certificate for each of us, congratulating us on all of the learning we have done about our borough. He also gave us special pens and notebooks made out of recycled paper that was collected on Staten Island. He called each of our names and we walked up to collect our certificates.

We left the Conference Room, so that it could be set up for our PIZZA PARTY! We went to the hallway and onto the stairway to get our photo taken, all together, with the Borough President.

Nicholas, who researched the Staten Island Advance, got an opportunity to be interviewed by a real newspaper reporter. He did a great job!
